BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Four family members escaped from a house fire that started around 3 a.m. Wednesday on 12th Place Southwest in Birmingham.

Investigators say four adults lived at the home. One person was taken to UAB Hospital to be treated for burns to the leg.

The Birmingham Battalion Chief says he thinks the family's smoke alarm saved their lives.

“A working smoke detector alerted them that there was smoke in the house due to a fire. Everyone managed to exit,” Battalion Chief Decimus Williamson said.

“We always encourage anyone in Birmingham who doesn't have a working smoke detector to go to a local fire station and get a free smoke detector through our Get Alarmed Birmingham Program. And, again it's another example of what a working smoke detector can do especially with this being fire prevention month in October,” Williamson added.

According to the State Fire Marshall's website, 69 people have died in fires in Alabama this year.
