BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham is one step closer to landing well-paying jobs after the Steris Corporation announced plans to take over an existing company.

The old U.S. Pipe headquarters has sat vacant for a number of years off of 1st Avenue North. The building is a part of the $175 million purchase by Steris Corporation of Ohio.

The company also bought the Integrated Medical Systems (IMS), which is located behind the U.S. Pipe building. The deal includes 15 acres in the Sloss Business District.

"Steris acquired IMS in May of this year. It's very complimentary to our existing and scope business. We are excited about the opportunity to create more jobs in Alabama," Stephen Norton with Steris Corporation said.

Tuesday, the Birmingham City Council approved tax rebates for the company totaling $300,000. The city will also work to improve sidewalks and crosswalks in the area. The rebates will be split over the next few years to see if the company is meeting new employment levels.

"The economic development potential here is fantastic. We expect to double our employment in the city of Birmingham over the next three years, adding 200 additional jobs," Norton said.

Norton says Steris is a national leader in the sale and manufacture of infection prevention and surgical products.

Norton said Birmingham's reputation as a place for major healthcare companies, the city's business climate and city leaders factored into their decision to open a facility.

"Birmingham has a terrific climate and we appreciate the support of Mayor Bell, President of the Council Johnathan Austin. They have been fantastic helping us with the program," Norton said.

Construction on renovating the U.S. Pipe and Integrated Medical Systems buildings is expected to start later this year and take 12 to 18 months to complete.
