From the JSU Athletics Department:
Jacksonville State head football coach John Grass was pleased with the Gamecocks' second scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday and continues to be impressed with the defense.
"I saw a lot of good effort today," the first-year head coach said following the 87-play scrimmage. "We are still evaluating a lot of positions, but I thought our guys competed and our effort was extremely good today.
"Defensively, I thought it was a really, really good day," said Grass. "It looks like the defensive line could be a strong suit for us and hopefully, we will continue to get better. You win games in the trenches, and our guys are hard to block, which in turn is going to make our offensive line a lot better because they have to block them everyday in practice."
Grass said the offense was much improved over the first scrimmage, but needs to continue to work on execution.
"Offensively, we were close to having a pretty good day, just missed on some execution of some plays," added Grass. "It was one guy here or there, but they are easy clean ups. We did a good job at times and a poor job at times, especially when we got in the red zone early in the scrimmage."
Grass said he hopes to be able to firm up a depth chart following Saturday's scrimmage.
"We got a lot of guys reps and there is a lot of competition for who is starting and who is the No. 2, and then that third guy who is challenging to make the travel squad," said Grass.
"I can't wait until I can watch the tape and get the grades from the scrimmage," said Grass. "Just watching and calling the game, I didn't get to observe as much, but I did see some guys make some plays. I thought our effort was extremely good today."
Jacksonville State will take Sunday off before returning to the practice field on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. as the Gamecocks continue to prepare for the season opener at Michigan State on Aug. 29.
