An inmate being kept at the Lee County Detention Facility was found unresponsive on Friday, and was later pronounced dead.

According to Lee County Corrections Officials, 23-year-old James Ike Hubbard of Auburn was found unresponsive by officers. Medical personnel were dispatched to the facility and attempted to revive Hubbard, but were unsuccessful.

After Hubbard never regained consciousness, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lee County Coroner at 11:40 p.m.

Hubbard had been sentenced to serve a jail term of three weekends after being convicted of DUI in the Opelika Municipal Court on Wednesday. Hubbard was scheduled to report to the facility to begin serving his first weekend on Friday.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, Hubbard was observed exiting a vehicle he was a passenger in at the Lee County Sheriff's Office parking lot. Witnesses say that Hubbard fell in the parking lot and appeared to be intoxicated.

Hubbard was able to stand back up, and Sheriff's deputies met him in the parking lot to escort him to the booking area of the facility.

Upon observation, deputies determined that Hubbard was intoxicated and after he responded to questions from the deputies, was placed in a holding cell where he remained under observation during the evening.

When the staff noticed that Hubbard had moved to the floor, they entered the cell and found him unresponsive. It is at that time they notified emergency medical personnel.

Hubbard has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Laboratory in Montgomery for a post mortem examination.

The State Investigation Bureau of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
