BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County Manager Tony Petelos announced at Thursday's county commission meeting he will be taking several weeks off the job to have surgery for his cancer.

Petelos told commissioners in May that he has cancer. He has been undergoing chemotherapy and will have his cancer surgery a week from Tuesday.

Petelos expects to take a leave of absence from August 25 until September 30.

He says he is optimistic about the surgery as well as the plan he's put in place for those who will carry out his work while he's gone.

Chief Deputy Manager Walter Jackson will be in charge of duties involved Cooper Green, senior services and the EMA.

Deputy County Manager Dan Biles will oversee the county's environmental services, roads and transportation and sewer department. He will also sign off on all contracts.

Chief Financial Officer George Tablack will handle the financial matters and technical department.

Jefferson County commissioners will not be allowed to oversee the departments under Petelos' management in accordance with the county manager act.

During the commission meeting, Petelos' priest from a Greek Orthodox church was invited to come and offer a special prayer for his well-being.
