FAIRFIELD, AL (WBRC) -

The Fairfield City Council has agreed to take steps to reinstate their insurance after they were dropped from their insurance company last weekend.

On Wednesday the City of Fairfield held a special called meeting to discuss what to do next.

Last week, the city lost its property and liability insurance after refusing to drop out of a lawsuit with its carrier, Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation.

Most of this meeting was done behind closed doors where the public could not hear what they were discussing, and when the council came back they were still divided on what to do.

Once council left the chambers to go into executive session, people in attendance could hear counselors arguing. Once they returned, there was still tension between the councilors.

"I'm sick of the egos, forget it!" yelled council woman Gloria Matthews. "Let's get on and get the insurance back. I don't care no more, let's get back, forget an ego."

Some councilors didn't want to do away with the lawsuit until AMIC contractually agreed to re-instate Fairfield's insurance. Others felt there wasn't time to wait- and that AMIC would keep their word, which is the way the majority of the councilors voted. Fairfield will withdraw the lawsuit.

A decision council woman Paralee Britt supports, "We cannot put this city at risk because of a frivolous lawsuit."

Council President Darnell Gardner was on the opposing side. "As we walked out of this meeting tonight still no insurance, just a verbal agreement," said Gardner.

Steve Wells, President of AMIC who tells me they are going to honor the agreement.

They will reinstate Fairfield's insurance once the lawsuit is withdrawn.

Fairfield will not be fined. Wells said AMIC hated it came to this, but he felt they had no choice with this "frivolous" lawsuit. He says he's glad this is over and they can go back to doing business with Fairfield.
