MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA) -

A Millbrook Middle School teacher who was put on paid leave during the district's first week back from summer break tendered her resignation to the Elmore County Schools Superintendent Thursday morning.

The Elmore County Board of Education called an emergency meeting, and an hour later accepted Michelle Beisel's resignation.

Beisel was entering her 14th year with the Elmore County School System when administrators placed her on paid leave. While agencies won't confirm the allegations made against Beisel, the central office promptly initiated an internal investigation.

Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson confirmed he was aware of the situation and was concerned, and investigators were exploring criminal charges.

Child Protect Executive Director Jannah Bailey says her agency is involved in the investigation. DHR is conducting an independent investigation and only becomes involved if the welfare and safety of a child is in question.

WSFA 12 News reached out to the Alabama Department of Education on the status of Beisel's teaching certificate. A spokesperson confirmed the department had been informed of the allegations, but could not comment on pending certification matters.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Langham confirms the department is searching for Beisel's replacement, and a substitute teacher was placed in the classroom.
