JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County deputies arrested two suspects after responding to a report of a burglary in progress on Tuesday.

Fifty-three-year-old Sandra Green Rogers and 24-year-old Cody Alan Griffin were arrested and charged with third degree burglary, second degree theft of property, first degree possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says it was alerted by a neighbor who saw a pickup truck drive behind a vacant house in the 4800 block of South Shades Crest Road just after 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

When deputies arrived, they noticed the basement door had been forced open and they could hear people talking inside, Chief Deputy Randy Christian said.

The deputies entered the house, announced their presence and ordered Rogers and Griffin to come downstairs.

Deputies say when asked what they were doing in the house, Rogers said she was looking into buying it for her daughter.

The suspects were detained while deputies searched the home. They didn't find anyone else inside.

Deputies say the walls of the home showed extensive damage where copper wiring had been cut and pulled through the sheetrock.

Christian said detectives questioned Rogers and Griffin, who both admitted to burglarizing the home to steal copper.

Rogers remains in custody with bonds totaling $60,000. Griffin remains in custody with bonds totaling $20,000.
