Birmingham, AL — The Birmingham Barons extended their division lead to 1.5 games with a 7-3 win over the Tennessee Smokies in front of 5,390 fans at Regions Field.
Tennessee jumped out front in the third, breaking a scoreless tie with a solo home run by Albert Almora against starter Myles Jaye (3-9, 5.83).
JeffryAntigua (0-2, 3.58) cruised through the first four frames, allowing just four hits in 4.0 scoreless innings. However, the Barons broke through with threeruns in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Chris Curley started the frame with a double and scored on an RBI triple by Dan Wagner tying the game at 1-1. Jared Mitchell followed with a bloop single to center but Wagner hesitated before heading home and was thrown out at the plate. Trayce Thompson made it a moot point by sending the next pitch over the scoreboard in left field for a two-run homer, his team-leading 12th of the season.
Jared Mitchell added an insurance run in the eighth with a solo home run giving the Barons a 4-1 lead. He finished 4-for-4 in the game and has nine home runs in 37 games with the Barons this season. Christian Marrero added a sacrifice later in the inning and Chris Curley followed with a two-run triple extending the lead to 7-1. Curley finished a home run short of the cycle going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Jaye, who had a complete game win in his last start against the Smokies on July 7, finished with one run allowed on eight hits over 8.0 IP while picking up his third win of the season.
The win gave the Barons a series victory and improved their record to 21-18 in the second half and 50-59 overall. TheBarons head back on the road Thursday to start a five-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts. Game one is scheduled for 6:15 PM CDT Thursday night.
