GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

Merchants in downtown Gadsden have a new problem on their hands - unwanted visits from "roof-jumpers."

This all started when several businesses reported leaky roofs after recent heavy rains.

One merchant found beer bottles, cigarette butts and fast food bags on top of his store. Police later found four people on top of a roof.

Merchants are concerned the people on their roofs could cause damage, either more holes in the roof or fire from a cigarette. Not to mention the danger to the roof-jumpers themselves.

"There is a safety issue with the people up there. Alcohol and heights probably don't work well together. I mean, you never know. You might hit a soft spot or a weak spot in that roof, and you can fall completely through the roof. And some of these are very high ceilings," said Kay Moore.

Merchants and police say they're now keeping a closer eye on the roofs. Authorities say the roof-jumpers could be charged with trespassing.
