FORKLAND, AL (WBRC) -

Forkland Mayor and Water Superintendent Derrick Biggs turned himself in Wednesday afternoon after a warrant was issued for his arrest last week.

Several town officials say multiple bank deposits he made for the water department were short what they should have been. They say more than $6,400 is unaccounted for going back to December 2013.

FOX6 News was there when Biggs turned himself in on Wednesday. He arrived at the Greene County jail at noon with his father - a Forkland town councilor.

Biggs was asked about the allegations against him as deputies led him inside the jail. "No comment. But I am not a thief and I am innocent until proven guilty, which will not be the case, thank you," said Biggs.

When asked if he'd repay any of the money that's reportedly missing from the Water Department, he said, "I won't be paying back anything I didn't take."

Forkland councilman Preston Davis said on Monday that Mayor Biggs never admitted to taking the money, but he had discussions with him and others about coming up with a payment plan to repay the money.
