The world of competitive water skiing is returning to the Tuscaloosa area.
The USA Water Ski 2014 Southeastern Regional Championship runs Wednesday through Sunday at Lymanland in Duncanville, from 8 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. daily, depending on weather. It is free and open to the public.
Tournament sponsor Lyman Hardy says there will be a number of different types of water skiing on display.
"It includes jumping, which is based basically on distance, how far you go down the lake," Hardy said.
"Slalom skiing is a series of maneuvers around a set course, where the rope gets shorter and shorter until you finally fall. Tricks are like gymnastics. They're pre-scored points, and you do tricks and they're evaluated to see where you stand among the competition," Hardy explained.
The tournament includes women, men and juniors. Hardy said spectators can expect to see competitors ranging from five to 85 years of age.
This is the second year for the tournament to be held in the Tuscaloosa area.
The skiing site is at 15865 Waterski Lane in Duncanville, just past mile marker 67 on Highway 82 East.
