Event offers help to local single moms

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Saturday morning a local nonprofit group gave a much needed helping hand to single moms in Birmingham.  Janice Ward is a proud member of the team who helped organize the Single Mothers Empowerment Conference.

"All focused on making lives better for single mothers and their children," explained Ward. She says daylong event was filled with workshops and motivational speakers.
"To just be able to address their family issues, career issues, parenting issues and so forth," added Ward.
The conference is aimed at giving single mothers a break to reenergize and to share information  about help that's available to them. Ward says there everything from local counseling groups to expert advice that's just a phone call away.
"I feel like there is such a disconnect between the resources that are available for single mothers and them actually getting them. So they can talk to them about how to get the assistance they need and how to not be afraid."
Ward speaks from experience. She raised her son on her own.
"When you are the only person, it is difficult. There are times when it is very overwhelming and you really do need someone to reach out to."
She understands the challenges single mom's face every day. Saturday's conference is meant to be a reminder that they are not alone.
"I feel an obligation really to be whatever vehicle I can to other single mothers to help them walk through the single parenthood like I did," added Ward.
Saturday's conference was held at The Bridge at the Faith Chapel Christian Center. It was the groups first conference and there are plans to hold another conference in the future.
