AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A local woman's stop at a gas station earlier this week took an unexpected turn when she went into labor inside the store's restroom.

At that same moment, Tanzania Davis, a former Marine, was experiencing car trouble when she stopped at the Sprint gas station on Peach Orchard Road. She described what happened in the next 30 minutes as a miracle.

"I stepped in the bathroom door and sure enough, she's over the toilet and you can see the baby's head coming out and I'm like, 'Oh my God! This is happening!'" Davis said.

Davis said she and a gas station employee sprang into action, with only a few things from inside the gas station at their disposal.

"I got her to calm down and we got her down on the floor," Davis explained. "We rolled her over on her back and we got pillows and paper towels and everything we could think of to put on the floor."

Davis has never coached anyone through the birthing process, but she knew something had to be done.

"This baby's coming, one way or the other so we're going to have to do this, and so I told her to take a deep breath," Davis said. "She took a deep breath and I said, 'We're going to push.'"

She said the baby came out, but he wasn't breathing.

"The cord was kind of wrapped around his neck when he first came out, so I took the cord from around his neck and we tied the cord off with his dad's shoe string and he started crying and that was just one of most beautiful cries I've heard ever."

Davis believes her car trouble wasn't just a coincidence.

"I think my car ran hot because God meant for me to be here and it felt right. It felt like I was supposed to be here."

Davis said witnessing the miracle at the gas station was a life-changing experience.

The woman gave birth to a healthy 8-pound baby boy. They were expected to be released from the hospital on Saturday.

Good news for Cullman shoppers: several stores damaged in the March hail storm are set to open in the next couple weeks. The parking lot is still pretty empty, but the store signs are fixed, the roofs have been repaired, and instead of 'closed' signs, there are now signs that say 'coming soon.'
