That phone call claiming there's a problem with your computer is a fake.

It's a tech support scam that's happening in our area right now. Viewers contacted the 12 News Defenders asking us to investigate.

The caller claims to work for Microsoft and says there's a virus on your computer, but they can help.

That's when you're told your computer will be shutdown unless you download a program that gives the scammers access to your computer.

Microsoft nor it's partners make unsolicited calls to charge you for computer security or software fixes.

Microsoft says to protect yourself from these phone telephone tech support scams:

  • Never give out your username or password.
  • Don't buy software or services over the phone.
  • If the caller asks for financial information, hang up.

If your computer really needs some work, try finding a reputable local service provider and conduct business face to face.

For steps on what to do if you already gave information to a person claiming to be tech support, visit the Microsoft website's security page.
