It seems crooks are constantly looking for new ways to take our money. This latest scam uses Caller ID to trick victims.

The FCC is taking on what appears to be a growing problem. Crooks are using a practice known as "spoofing" in order to disguise a name and number on Caller ID.

When you think you are getting a call from a loved one, it could actually be a stranger.

Many of us like to use Caller ID to screen our calls or avoid telemarketers. But thieves who want your financial information may pretend to call from your bank and ask for your social security number, date of birth, etc.

So how do you protect yourself?

The FCC suggests the following tips:

-Don't give out account numbers, passwords or any identifying information over the phone.

-If you get a call hang up and call the number on your bill or bank statement to find out if they really need the information requested.

The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009 prohibits caller ID spoofing for the purposes of defrauding or otherwise causing harm.

Penalties are up to $10,000 for each violation.

Report complaints to the FCC by calling 1-888-CALL-FCC or online at
