Baby Bou Bou makes first public appearance

Besides the scars still healing on his face, neck and the hole still in his chest, 19-month-old Bounkham 'Bou Bou' Phonesavanh seemed happy at a breakfast farewell and fundraiser for his family Wednesday.

The child's mother, Alecia Phonesavanh, became emotional when she thanks everyone who helped her family and when she spoke about her son's injuries.

"When we have to look at the scars he has to wear the rest of his life, it is a very sad reminder of just how thoughtless," said Phonesavanh.

Bou Bou acted like a normal toddler, but his mother said he still has a long road to recovery.

"We're still not sure about brain damage that might have happened or the countless surgeries he has to endure to repair his face and chest," said Phonesavanh. "He still has a hole in his chest that we have to change dressings on quite frequently throughout the day."

Phonesavanh took cell phone video of Bou Bou when he was released from the hospital Tuesday. He was there for five weeks recovering after Habersham County Police SWAT team threw a flash bang grenade into the play-pen the child was sleeping in.

Police were serving a no-knock search warrant for an alleged drug dealer, but no drugs were found inside the house and no one was arrested.

"It's so upsetting to know that he had to go through this in the first place. This is not a fight we are even close to backing down from. Every day we have to look at our son. I'm glad to know we have him and we can be together."

The family was only in Habersham County visiting. They were there two months when this incident happened.

Now that Baby Bou Bou is out of the hospital, his family plans to drive back home to Wisconsin on Thursday.
