GOP leaders continue to spar over spending bills on Education, Medicaid

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -

Rhetoric and finger pointing increased from legislative leaders and Gov. Pat McCrory as North Carolina state government started a new fiscal year without budget adjustments that would likely include teacher pay raises.

McCrory told reporters Tuesday that Senate Republicans were wrong to return a slimmed-down spending plan the House approved last week without voting on its contents.

The governor backed the House plan designed to ensure teacher salaries would increase this fall and avoid mired negotiations on larger budget bills. He likened Senate Republicans to previous legislative leaders who discouraged open debate.

House Republicans sent the bill back to the Senate later Tuesday. Senate leader Phil Berger repeated it won't be taken up.

Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue of Raleigh says Republicans need to stop playing political games.
