TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Wicker family's attorney confirms to Tucson News Now that their dog Valor was found dead in Gilbert. This after a lengthy search for the dog who escaped a Gilbert boarding facility where 20 dogs died. Tucson News Now will have more on these breaking developments. Zack and Heather Wicker planned to relocate to Tucson, so they put their family pets into a boarding facility in Gilbert. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of 20 dogs, including one of the Wicker's, at that same business.

The couple was told Saturday June 21 that their dogs ran away, but they soon learned that it was only half true. Their 2-year-old dog Remington died with 19 others after a dog reportedly chewed through a power chord for the air conditioner. Wicker's father Steven Hoeft said he remembers learning about what really happened.

"When I realized what happened, I was so nauseated," he said.

The family's other pet, Valor, is now the center of a community-wide search in Gilbert. Hoeft said the family hired a tracking dog that's picked up a few scents, and dozens of volunteers continue to expand the search area around town. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office committed a few deputies to the search and sent the agency's helicopter out for an aerial view.

The dog has become a symbol of hope for many of the families whose pets died at the boarding facility, so they hope to bring him home soon.

"That gives everyone a lot of comfort and when he's finally found I think there's going to be just an outpouring of relief," said Hoeft. "I really think that's when the healing starts."

The situation doesn't end with healing, according to Hoeft. He said the family is hoping for criminal charges and some changes to the laws that govern boarding facilities.
