(WMC) - The Shelby County Schools board extended Superintendent Dorsey Hopson's contract to a four-year extension.

The vote was 6-0.

Hopson initially signed a three-year contract at the start of the 2013-14 school year. This extension runs through June 30, 2018. His leadership will affect the development of the district's 80/90/100 strategic plan.

Three people spoke against the extending Hopson's contract in a meeting Monday.

"This isn't a John Grisham movie," attendee Valerie Griffith said.

While the contract includes no change to Hopson's current yearly salary, the board has the option of approving bonuses based on the results of his annual performance evaluation.

"We must have an educator now," Claudette Boyd, retired Memphis Police captain said.

"Mr. Hopson deserves some props, but for the most part I think it's time for us to consider someone else," attendee Jacqueline Harrison said.

Then three others took the stand to speak on their favors with extending the contract.

"Things are going real well. So I do stand in recommendation for the extension of the contract," said attendee David Page.

The firm that conducts and collects his official job evaluations says school board members gave him glowing reviews.

"This is an extremely strong evaluation that the board has provided for their superintendent," Henry Evans, the Centre Group member added.

The six school board members in attendance all spoke in favor of extending the deal.

"Hard skills don't always equate to great performance. A lot of it is in your soft skills," David Reaves, Shelby County School Board member said.

It came as no surprise when they voted in favor of granting the extension.

"We need the continuity in creating a plan that was going to move us to academic achievement," Shante Avant, Shelby Country School Board member noted.

Hopson says his focus remains student achievement.

"I was very pleased. We just got so much hard work to do. I just appreciate their willingness to make a commitment to me and my vision,"  Hopson said.
