LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Lufkin man has pleaded guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend and her daughter, accepting a sentence of life without parole.

Kevin McKelvey, 38, entered the plea in District Judge Paul White's 159th Judicial District Court on Monday. He pleaded guilty to a capital murder charge. Originally, the state had intended to pursue the death penalty. However, as part of the plea bargain, that option was taken off the table.

At Mckelveys plea hearing, Linda Harper spoke on behalf of Hoyle's family to Mckelvey in a victim statement."He had no remorse. He laughed the whole time, it was like it was a joke to him, " Harper said.

Authorities say McKelvey shot Teresa Hoyle, 39, and her daughter, Shaunika Hoyle, 22 in August of 2013. Sheriff Greg Sanches said Teresa Hoyle and her daughter pulled up to the mother's house in the 100 block of Charlton Road in a car driven by another man. McKelvey used a rifle to shoot and kill Shaunika Hoyle when she entered the house, Sanches said.

At that point, McKelvey went outside and shot Teresa Hoyle through the passenger window, Sanches said. Teresa Hoyle was struck in the head by the gunfire, and the driver of the car rushed her to Lufkin Memorial Hospital. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

McKelvey was also charged with two counts of aggravated assault because he shattered a window with two other children inside of the car.
