Dave Brat hires former Cantor operative to run campaign

Just days after defeating Eric Cantor in a historic primary battle, Congressional hopeful Dave Brat announced he is replacing his 23-year-old campaign manager with a veteran of the 2010 Cantor campaign.

Amanda Chase served as Cantor's political director during the 2010 congressional campaign, as well as state political director for Virginia Lieutenant Governor candidate Susan Stimpson.

Brat made the announcement at his first news conference since his primary win, but notably absent at Thursday's event, no questions from reporters. The candidate said he is still in a transition phase, offering no timeframe on when he will take questions on specific policy positions.

"I appreciate your patience as we transition from a campaign that many had ignored, to one that seems to have captured the nation's attention," Brat said outside his Glen Allen campaign headquarters.

"We've actually been trying to answer the thousands of emails and phone calls that we received since last Tuesday. And we've been doing that with CNN trucks in our yard for the past few days."

Democratic critics contend Brat has not developed well formed responses to policy questions, citing the candidate's few appearances since the primary, as well as an interview conducted with NBC News.

In the phone discussion with NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd, Brat said he did not have a well crafted answer on whether there should be a federally mandated minimum wage.

Staffers said time is still necessary to recalibrate the campaign, and Brat will speak with local media first when the decision is made to grant interviews. Towards the close of Thursday's news conference, Brat said his energy is now focused on uniting Republicans behind his campaign.

"Volunteers and supporters are coming from all corners of the Republican Party, and beyond," Brat said. "We've got long time Republicans of all stripes. We have Tea Partiers, Independents and Libertarians on board."
