Year 2 brings tough change for TSAFC

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson Soccer Academy FC lost Sunday for the 2nd time this season to the Beach FC (Long Beach, California).

The result the second time around was a tad more friendly 3-1 than the 5-1 defeat TSAFC suffered in their second  game of the season back on May 18th.

"We only had three practices going into that match," said captain Kelly Kearns.

Kearns is one of several players back for the second season of Tucson's entry into the Women's Premier Soccer League.

Year Two however is going to be drastically different than Year One.

In the club's initial campaign, TSAFC made the playoffs. That won't happen this season but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Tucson has switched divisions. Last season they played in the Big Sky North with three teams from Utah and the Phoenix Del Sol.

But when two of the sides in Utah decided not to field squads in 2014 TSAFC had a choice; accept a realigned position in the Pacific North Division comprised primarily of teams from Northern California or head to the more difficult Pacific South Division and compete against teams from the talent-rich Southern California region.

Finances and travel logistics dictated the second option. As a result TSAFC is 1-4-1 in their first six matches.

"We wanted to play the best," said assistant coach Todd Garelick. ‘We're trying to prepare our team for college. When they go back to their colleges in August are they prepared as they can be. We're going to get that from playing the best competition."

Beach FC is now 8-0 on the season. The defending champion San Diego SeaLions (5-2) beat TSAFC on Saturday night and LA Premier FC is 4-1. Those are the three best teams in WPSL.

And guess what. Tucson must play two of those three teams on a grueling three matches in three nights L.A. swing coming up in two weeks.

The club returns to Kino North Stadium on Tuesday July 8th for a showdown against Phoenix.
