Editorial: Stay weather aware this summer

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen first aired on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

It's summer! So we're used to dealing with pop-up thunderstorms and the inconvenience that can come with them.

However, of late, we find ourselves in a cycle of daily thunderstorms…sometimes reoccurring many times throughout the day. Several of the storms of the last week or so have had severe elements…straight line winds, lightning and flash flooding…more like early spring than summer.

When we get past what we think of as severe weather/tornado season in the spring, many of us turn off our weather radios so that we can sleep at night.

But you know what, tornadoes can form at any time of the year in our part of the country. And, severe thunderstorms, producing straight line winds and flooding can create life and property threatening situations. So, please remain weather alert and keep your weather radio on 24/7 with batteries charged, even now, in summer.

Also, sudden downpours can make the roads very treacherous. Yet, there are drivers who never slow down, even in those weather conditions. The road surface becomes one huge puddle of water, which creates the ideal environment for hydroplaning, skidding and accidents.

"Oh, I can handle any situation on the road, under any conditions"…the famous last of words of many who've been involved in car accidents. Don't use your cruise control while driving on wet roads and stay off your phone. Driving on wet roads requires your full attention.

Please use caution for your safety and the safety of those around you. What do your think?
