MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Another volunteer fire department in Marshall County is petitioning the county commission to be named a fire district and will soon be asking voters to approve a $60 a year fee to improve fire safety.

Waterfront Volunteer Fire Department is petitioning the county commission, and if approved, that brings the number to five. As of now, Georgia Mountain, 4-C, Swearengin, and Hebron have already been approved by the County Commission and are established fire districts.

Waterfront Volunteer Fire Department is now requesting the commission to establish their territory as an established fire district. The departments are submitting petitions to the probate judge to include a $5 per month per household referendum for their voters in the July runoff election.

The money would go to the local fire district to aid in operational and capital improvement expenses. Waterfront officials said they really need some new trucks.

"Like that one truck that we borrow," said Chief Richard McKinley. "We can replace that, get one of our own, and we got one old truck out there. It's a good truck, but it's obsolete."

The county commission is expected to take up the issue Wednesday morning.

Good news for Cullman shoppers: several stores damaged in the March hail storm are set to open in the next couple weeks. The parking lot is still pretty empty, but the store signs are fixed, the roofs have been repaired, and instead of 'closed' signs, there are now signs that say 'coming soon.'
