BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham is attempting to bring in more big-time events. One of the events the city is vying for is the 2021 World Games.

The World Games are similar to the Olympics, only much smaller. The games happen every four years and were last hosted in Colombia. They feature lacrosse, bowling, softball and racquetball along with several other sports during the 11-day event.

Birmingham's convention and visitors bureau has pledged the $125,000 needed to bid on the games. If the city wins, the event could bring in as much as $256 million to Birmingham and surrounding areas.

City Councilor Jay Roberson understands other cities that have hosted the Olympics have had to make a serious commitment to getting tens of thousands of spectators from point A to point B.

"When you have an event of this nature, it puts an eye on your city. It puts attention on your city and hopefully, from a Federal level and a State level, we can get the grants and needs for public transportation to get it to where it can support an event of this magnitude," said Roberson.

Birmingham is the only U.S. city bidding on the World Games.
