Morgan Co. ambulance service closes

HARTSELLE, AL (WAFF) -

An ambulance company that served the southwestern section of Morgan County is off the road. Officials said Cross Roads Ambulance went out of service as of noon Wednesday.

There is still ambulance service in the area: First Response out of Decatur is covering while officials in Hartselle and Falkville decide on long-term plans.

First Response owner David Childers said they will have one ambulance in Hartselle, one in Falkville, and a third roving other sections of southwestern Morgan County.

Leaders in Hartselle and Falkville said they found out late Tuesday afternoon that financial issues would shut Cross Roads down. They are in communication with First Response about where to go from their current situation.

First Response expanded its fleet to cover Decatur when DEMSI went out of business and its owner filed bankruptcy earlier this year.

The director of Morgan County's 911 center, Ryan Welty, said familiarity with First Response will make the quick transition easier.

"From my perspective, because First Response is already doing business in Morgan County, it's very easy for us to transition them into dispatching into Hartselle and Falkville and southwest Morgan County," said Welty.

The mayors of Hartselle and Falkville said First Response will be licensed temporarily for eight months while they figure out a long-term solution.

"They can extend them at eight-month license under Cross Road's licensing agreement, and it will give us a chance to evaluate First Response to see how well they're doing," said Hartselle Mayor Don Hall.

Calls to Cross Roads Ambulance Service went unanswered. The owner of First Response said this extension will not affect their current service in Decatur.
