Superintendent Gail Bishop has announced the closure of Russell Cave National Monument on June 5 and 6.

The closure is to complete the "Cyclic Resurfacing of Roads and Parking Areas" project. The park received funding to make improvements, including a resurfaced park road, re-striped parking spaces, and additional accessible curb cut-outs for wheelchair users. The last resurface was about 20 years ago.

The purpose of this project is to keep the paved roads, parking areas, and road bridge in good condition to allow for safe travel for visitors. Completion of the project will prevent excessive deterioration of the road surface and serious need for rehabilitation in the future. The entrance road is the only access to Russell Cave National Monument, and the roads within are essential for emergency vehicles and firefighting access.

The park will re-open on June 7 in time for National Trails Day. For questions about the closure, call (256) 845-9605 or visit the park's website at www.nps/ruca and the Facebook page at
