Birmingham, AL — The Birmingham Barons defeated the Tennessee Smokies 4-3 in game two of their five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies Sunday afternoon in front of 2,315 fans at Smokies Park.
Trayce Thompson started the game off with a bang, leading off the first inning with a solo home run against Smokies starter Corey Black. It was the second homer in two days for Thompson and his sixth of the season.
The Smokies responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer by top Cub prospet Kris Bryant. The homer was his league-leading 18th of the season. Bryant collected his third RBI of the game in the third on an run-scoring groundout.
After Dan Wagner pulled the Barons to within a run in the fourth on an RBI single, Rangel Ravolo tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, scoringChris Curley from third base.
The Barons took a 4-3 win in the 8th inning, getting a two-out single by Chris Curley scoring Keenyn Walker from second base against reliever Tony Zych (1-3, 5.25).
Reliever Nestor Molina (2-2, 5.92) allowed three hits over 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief of starter Chris Beck. Cody Winiarski struck out two over 1.1 scoreless innings for his team-leading fifth save of the season.
The win was the Barons fifth in the last six games and seventh over the past ten as they improved to 25-32 on the season. With the loss, the Smokies dropped their seventh-straight game and fell to 26-30. The Barons will look to pick up a series victory Monday night as RHP Bryan Blough (0-0, 3.52) takes the hill against RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (2-2, 2.39). First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 PM CDT.
