OXFORD, Miss. - No. 10 Ole Miss plated five runs in its first plate appearance of the 2014 NCAA Oxford Regional en route to a 12-2 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday in front of a record crowd of 10,394 fans at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
After Friday's action was moved to Saturday due to inclement weather in the Magnolia State, the Gamecocks (36-26) will face No. 3-seed Georgia Tech in an elimination game on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Yellow Jackets were blanked, 8-0, in the first game of the day by No. 2 seed Washington. The Rebels (42-18) will face the Huskies in the winners bracket contest at 3 p.m. If Jax State gets past Georgia Tech, it will return to the field at 7 p.m. to face the loser of that contest.
Jax State scored first off of Ole Miss starter Chris Ellis in the top of the first inning after a one-out walk by Eddie Mora-Lorea and a single by Griff Gordon, Paschal Petrongolo laced a single to left field to score Mora-Lorea. Gordon's base hit was his 97th of the season, which broke the school record for hits in a single season, surpassing former Gamecock All-American Clay Whittemore, who had 96 in the 2008 campaign.
The Rebels answered in the home half of the first by scoring five runs to give Ellis a 5-1 cushion. Sikes Orvis started had a two-run double to give the Rebels a 2-1 advantage off of Jax State starter Zachary Fowler. J.B. Woodman singled up the middle for the third run of the inning, while Errol Robinson closed out the scoring for UM with a single to center to drive in two more runs for a 5-1 lead.
Graham Officer, who entered in the first inning, settled in nicely as the Rebels were silent on the scoreboard until the fourth after scoring a pair of runs. Orvis, who finished the contest 3-for-4 with five RBI, singled through the right side to score the second run of the inning. Will Allen had an RBI single to give the Rebels a 7-1 lead.
Orvis continued his hot-hitting with a two-run home run blast to right center in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-1, before scoring three more in the seventh for the final margin.
Jax State put a run on the board in the eighth as Gordon recorded his second hit of the game to drive in his team-high 50th RBI of the season to score Gavin Golsan, who led off with a single. Gordon and Andrew Bishop each had two hits to lead the Gamecocks.
Davis turned in a complete game performance on the bump and moved to 10-1 on the season. The Birmingham, Ala.-native finished with eight strikeouts and allowed eight hits to earn the win. Fowler (7-8) gave up five runs in just 2/3 of an inning to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
Sunday's game with Georgia Tech will be available on ESPN 3 and the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris describing all the action.
