A new national survey shows more than half of Americans cannot swim and it's a trend the Red Cross wants to change.

The non-profit hopes to teach 50,000 more people in 50 cities, including Birmingham and Mobile, how to swim over the next several years. Birmingham's drowning rate is greater than the national average and in Mobile, the rate is more than double the national average.

The Red Cross has helped citizens learn how to safely have fun in the water for 100 years.

According to statistics from the CDC, an average of 10 people die each day in the U.S. from unintentional drowning and 20 percent of those victims are children.
