Fleet Feet Sports holds Meals on Wheels Day

The official Meals on Wheels Day was Saturday at Fleet Feet Savannah.

The store, located on Waters Avenue, hoped to raise thousands of dollars for seniors in our area.

For every shoe or piece of apparel purchased, Fleet Feet Sports Savannah donated $5 to Meals on Wheels, part of Senior Citizens, Inc. Organizers say this is a great way to feed and take care of the elderly.

"We are facing some major budget cuts. We already have 600 people on a waiting list, so that $5 will feed a senior for an entire day," said Karen Daiss, Senior Citizens, Inc.

Fleet Feet raised more than $500 for Meals on Wheels.

In conjunction to this, WTOC's Lynda Figueredo teamed up with CrossFit Hyperformance and Fleet Feet Sports to hold a plank-off and-squat off.

For a donation, folks were asked to hold a plank for as long as they could for a chance to win a pair of shoes, and to do as many squats as they could in a minute, to win a membership to CrossFit Hyperformance. This event was held to benefit Meals on Wheels.

"I think a lot of the seniors tend to be inactive and homebound, and may not be able to get out as much to eat healthy meals or prep them. It is an important thing that our senior citizens are eating as healthy as we are," said Jennifer McKenzie, CrossFit Hyperformance.

The longest plank was held for more than 22 minutes.
