SSU holds Annual Girls on the Run Celebration Run

More than 1,200 people gathered at Savannah State University's Tiger Stadium on Saturday, for the Girl's on the Run Celebration Run.

The annual event got its kickoff from Mayor, Edna Jackson, who spoke to an enthusiastic crowd full of colorfully decked out folks.

Girls on the Run touts this as a celebration run, so we asked them what is it that we are celebrating.

"Today is a celebration of a 10-week journey that 466 girls and 142 volunteers have been on for the last 10 weeks. I am just so amazed and so proud of these girls. They have been training twice a week for 10 weeks, to come out here and run this 5K Celebration Run. Girls on the Run is a program about creating happy, healthy, confident girls, who are willing to go out and just be the leaders of tomorrow. This program is all about building confidence, self esteem, and yes, we do train for a 5K, but the running is so secondary. At Girls on the Run, the finish line is really just the beginning," said Kathy McCarthy, Girls on the Run.

Girls on the Run starts back up this fall at participating Elementary schools.
