Good Samaritan gets home renovated after life-altering accident

When Brian Angone first heard about Brad Hughes' accident, he knew he would be a perfect candidate for "Law Sons and Daughters."

The non-profit organization helps law enforcement officers like Hughes, who go to great lengths putting their own needs before others.

"Brad is known in the community as a very wonderful person and very giving person, and that is the type of candidates we like to help. He is the kind of guy that likes to help everybody else," Agone said.

It was that will and kindness to help others that brought Hughes to Midlothian Turnpike on an icy March day. While trying to help a stranded driver, another car crashed into Hughes's SUV, pinning him between the two cars.

He later had to have his legs amputated. Saturday, several businesses and organizations came together to help make life easier for Hughes by giving his home a few upgrades.

"Today, we presented Brad with a brand new van that is equipped for handicap accessible. We are also building Brad a brand new ramp in his back yard, we are refinishing his front porch, along with we are going to redo his bathroom and we are going to widen all the doors in his house," Agone said.

Hughes's attorney Jeff Oppleman spoke for the family due to pending legal circumstances.

"He has almost been in tears, because he has a big struggle ahead, but he is a very strong-willed individual and he has a very supportive family," Oppleman said.

The work being done inside the home is expected to be finished in a week. Angone says helping Hughes was a no-brainer. He plans to keep helping others in the future, only this time with Hughes's help.

"Once you help someone like this, you just want to keep on and keep on, and that is what our charity is about," Agone said.
