From the University of Alabama at Birmingham Athletics Department:
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 3 seed UAB softball team (31-26) dropped its opening game of the NCAA Athens Regional, 4-0, to the No. 2 seed NC State (35-16) at Jack Turner Softball Stadium on Friday.
"We came here to score runs and we failed to do so," head coach Marla Townsend said. "That's what it comes down to in the postseason, you want to show up and play your best. I think we played hard and I don't think we gave them anything but we needed to manufacture runs and we failed to do that."
The Wolfpack plated three runs in the third and an insurance run in the seventh and got solid pitching from Emily Weiman in the circle, who allowed three UAB hits and struck out eight.
Kristen McGrath totaled three of UAB's hits and went 2-for-3, while Amy Dennis finished with the Blazers' other hit. Leigh Streetman got the start and went 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs, three walks and seven hits. Lannah Campbell entered in relief and tossed the final 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
UAB will play its second round game, game four of the regional, at 2:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. CT against the winner of the No. 1 seed Georgia and No. 4 seed Chattanooga. UABsports.com will again offer free audio for the game and GeorgiaDogs.com will offer free video for UAB's second game of the regional.
