Montgomery Police cautions against debit card scam
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
From the Montgomery Police Department:
The Montgomery Police Department is
cautioning area residents after receiving reports of debit card scammers posing
as police officers and demanding payment to avoid the threat of arrest.
The scammers direct people to
obtain a Green Dot MoneyPak card, or reloadable debit card, and provide the
number on the card so the scammer can collect payment. The scammers claim that
payment is due for an outstanding debt or fine, and that an arrest warrant will
be issued if payment is not made.
MPD advises that the department does not conduct phone
call solicitations for funds. The department warns the public against
responding to debit card scammers and advises anyone who receives such a call
to report it to MPD's Criminal Investigation Division, 334-625-2831.
