A civil rights organization is putting out a call for action after several recent acts of violence in Birmingham, including the death of an off duty police officer.

The Birmingham Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference came out Friday to strongly condemn what they call senseless murders and acts of violence. There message was aimed at African American men.

Pastor Calvin Woods and other members of the SCLC talked about how too many African American men are in prisons than in colleges and universities. Woods says it is time to "come back to God" and to "those hallowed values taught by grandparents." Woods says the SCLC is stepping up to the problem. The SCLC is calling for anger management training, parenting skills, and for mass meetings in Birmingham churches starting in October.

"With a united front, condemn this deplorable thing and offer what we feel is a solution to help alleviate much of the violence and hatred going on. We do it every day. Every Sunday, all during the week," said Woods.

Woods says the SCLC is also turning to social media to get their message out.
