Group hopes to save St. Jude Educational Institute

The clock is ticking for current students, alumni, friends and supporters of Saint Jude Educational Institute to "do something" to keep the school open next school year.

Officials made the announcement last week that the school would close at the end of this school year, which is in just a few weeks.

Thursday the Saint Jude Alumni and Friends Incorporated met to discuss their plan of action.

They're rushing to raise as much money as they can, as fast as they can. The goal is $100,000 in 10 days.

"I'm a firm believer that if we have to go out and stand at intersections with buckets saying 'save St. Jude,' we got to do that to," St. Jude Alumni & Friends Association President Bill Ford said.

It's a serious challenge to meet an even more serious need, and time is working against them.

St. Jude Educational Institute officials announced after this school year, the doors will be closed for good.

But these alumni, current students, parents and concerned citizens say they're not accepting that as a final answer.

"Our strategies will create some movement and a reaction because it's warranted," Ford said.

And they've gathered to put their money where their mouth is and encourage others to do the same to keep the doors open.

"This money, to me, will demonstrate; it will be a tangible demonstration of how there is broad base support for St. Jude Educational Institute," Ford said.

Right now on there's an online petition to Support and Sustain the school. As of Thursday night, it has about 760 signatures.

The goal is to get 10,000 signatures.

"Please help us keep St. Jude alive, keep our school safe, keep it going because we need help," Janice Johnson said.

The ball is rolling to set up separate account specifically for funds relating to re-opening St. Jude Educational Institute.

Alumni Association leaders said they would have that information for us Friday. As soon as we get the donation information, we will share it with you.
