The No. 4 seed Samford University softball team's season came to an end in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the No. 2 seed University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Friday, May 9, at the UNCG Softball Complex.
The Bulldogs (38-18) surrendered the lone run of the contest in the top of the first inning of play on a pair of base hits. Sarah Beth Roberts opened the inning with a single that caromed off of Samford pitcher Mollie Hanson. Nicole Osterman brought home Roberts on a sharply hit ball to Abbie Miranda at second.
SU responded in the bottom of the frame with its' best offensive effort of the day as Megan Dowdy led off the inning with a single to center field and was followed up by Callie Brister who single up the middle to put runners on first and second with one out.
Caitlin Bice reached on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat that retired Brister who was on her way to second. With runners on the corners Caroline Wilder drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Hannah Taylor put the ball in play for a fielder's choice to end the inning.
After the first both pitcher's settled into a groove and did not allow a scoring threat for the rest of the game. The combination of Chattanooga's Taylor Deason and Katie Henderson surrendered on three hits to the Bulldog offense while Hanson went the distance for SU and scattered three more UTC hits the remainder of the game.
Hanson (23-10) recorded four strikeouts and did not issue a walk in the contest.
With the season now at an end the team broke six school records en route to its most successful outing in 27 years; the Bulldogs broke the records for most hits (422), runs (292), RBIs (275), home runs (51), wins (38) and win percentage (.678).
Individually three Bulldogs set new single-season marks: Megan Dowdy broke the single-season stolen base (22) record and recorded the most hits (65) in a season while teammate Abby Adams set new single-season highs for most home runs (14) and runs (47) scored.
