PENSACOLA, FL (RNN) - Two inmates died and more than 100 inmates and corrections officers were injured after a suspected gas explosion overnight at Escambia County Central Booking and Detention Center, media reports stated.
The explosion happened at around 11 p.m. Wednesday, bringing the ceiling of the facility down and causing a partial collapse of the walls, the Pensacola News-Journal stated.
Kathleen Dough-Castro, county spokeswoman, confirmed the deaths Thursday morning.
About 600 inmates were incarcerated at the Pensacola facility.
The injured have suffered non life-threatening injuries and are being treated at Pensacola-area hospitals. The uninjured inmates are being moved to neighboring facilities.
This comes a day after the county was flooded with record rainfall. It is unknown if the explosion and the flooding event were related, though the facility had flooded during the deluge Tuesday and Wednesday.
