Barons suffer first walk-off loss of the season

From the Birmingham Barons Media Relations Department:

Birmingham, AL — The Birmingham Barons suffered their first walk-off loss of the season, allowing two runs in the ninth in a 5-4 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field.

The Barons scored in each of the first three innings, thanks in large part to the hot hitting of Micah Johnson. He led off the game with a double and scored on a base hit by Trayce Thompson to give the Barons a 1-0 lead. An inning later he hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, to push the lead to 2-1.

After a solo home run by Scott Schebler in the bottom half of the second, the Barons responded on a bases loaded single by Michael Earley to take a 4-1 lead in the third.

Starter Nick McCully held the Lookouts at bay for most of the night, scattering eight hits, but allowed three solo home runs including two to Schebler over 6.0 IP. He departed with the Barons leading 4-3 in favor of reliever Nelvin Fuentes who struck out two over 1.1 scoreless IP.

Cody Winiarski (0-1, 6.48) retired the final two batters in the eight but ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing a leadoff double to Chris O'Brien. Darnell Sweeney tied the game at 4-4 with a base hit to center and went all the way to third when centerfielder Keenyn Walker misplayed the ball. After intentionally walking Jeremy Hazelbaker, Daniel Mayora sent the Lookouts crowd home happywith a base hit to center, giving Chattanooga a 5-4 win.

The blows save was the first of the season for Winiarski as the Barons fell to 10-11 on the season. With the win, the Lookouts improved to 9-12.

Micah Johnson finished a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-5. It was his third three-hit outing in the last eight games for the Barons second baseman. Shortstop Jamie Pedroza also finished 3-for-5 in the losing effort.

The Barons will look to snap a two-game losing skid Friday as RHP Chris Beck (2-2, 5.91) takes the hill against RHP Tyson Brummett (1-1, 0.56). First pitch isscheduled for a 6:15 PM CDT.
