BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Do you have questions about in vitro fertilization? UAB is hosting an educational session on Tuesday, April 22 to answer questions about IVF and share information about advancements in IVF technology.

Dr. G. Wright Bates, the director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, said around 25 years ago, a good IVF program had between 10 to 15 percent success rate for a couple getting pregnant in the first month of IVF.

He says UAB has seen new record success, with almost two-thirds of couples being able to conceive through IVF within the first month.

"The message is that many couples struggle with getting pregnant and expanding their family. We just want to share with them that there's a lot of hope out there, with simple things and technology," Dr. Bates said.

Dr. Bates recommends women who are older than 35 who have tried to get pregnant for six months without success should see a specialist. If you're younger than 35, he recommends trying for a year to get pregnant before seeing a specialist.

"In Vitro Fertilization 101: Technology and Family Building" will be held on Tuesday, April 22 in Room 5324 at the UAB Women and Infants Center. Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 5:45 and the program will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

If you are interested in attending, you can register online here or call 205-996-2229.

There is no cost to attend the session. Free parking is available in the deck at Fourth Ave. South and 18th Street.
