Decorated veteran receives brand new Arrington home

For a veteran who has faced his share of challenges, a new home is a dream come true. After flying more than 140 combat missions, suffering PTSD and then a brain tumor, the new house is just what the doctor ordered.

Luke Van Dorston and his wife, Abby, got the keys to a beautiful 2,700-square-foot home in the Kings Chapel neighborhood in Arrington, thanks to the generosity of several local businesses and the group Operation Finally Home.

The Air Force special operations veteran is a decorated hero who parachuted into hostile territory and became a one-man air traffic controller, directing raids.

He's smart, brave and daring, and he as two bronze stars following 10 years of combat.

Of course, the hero takes no credit.

"Everyone calls us heroes. They are the hero's heroes. They are the ones. We can't thank them enough," Luke Van Dorston said.

And for the wife who has dealt with so much for so long, this is more than anything a time to exhale.

"It's unbelievable. A weight has just lifted. It's just nice we have a place to call home now," Abby Van Dorston said.

Operation Finally Home honors wounded, ill and injured veterans and widows of fallen troops with new custom-built, mortgage-free homes.
