DIRTY DOZEN - Is Organic Your Only Option?
If you want to get rid of pesticides on your fruits and vegetables, going organic is your best option. But not everyone can afford organic fruits and vegetables. Organic produce may not be available where you shop. So what can you do?
Dr. Beth K says - First of all, you can spend your dollars on organic where it matters most. Known as the "dirty dozen", these are the top most pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables:
The "Dirty Dozen":
Ø Celery
Ø Peaches
Ø Strawberries
Ø Apples
Ø Domestic blueberries
Ø Nectarines
Ø Sweet bell peppers
Ø Spinach, kale and collard greens
Ø Cherries
Ø Potatoes
Ø Imported grapes
Ø Lettuce
So if you want to get the most bang for your organic buck, these are the fruits and vegetables most worth the money.
However, if you really don't want to shop organic, studies shows that there are things you can do to lower the amounts of pesticides on your produce.
Ø Rinse and peel. Pesticides stay on the outer surface so if you rinse and peel, you can get rid of the pesticides. That's fine for vegetables like carrots but I don't like to recommend peeling for potatoes since a lot of nutrients are in the peel.
Ø Rinse and scrub. For vegetables like potatoes and peppers, get out your vegetable brush and scrub them well under running water. You'll get rid of much of the pesticides left on the surface.
Ø Rinse, Rinse, Rinse! For delicate produce like strawberries, rinsing thoroughly will get rid of a lot of the pesticide residues. To keep berries from going bad, only rinse the ones you plan to eat right away. Rinse under running water for at least 30 seconds.
Ø Discard Outer Leaves. Remember, pesticides stay on the surface. So on lettuce and cabbage, peel off the outer few leaves and throw them away. Still rinse the remaining leaves thoroughly to reduce any leftover pesticides.
