Shelby County deputies will conduct a safety checkpoint this week to screen drivers for DUI and other offenses.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says the checkpoint will be at Cahaba Beach Road between 2 and 3 a.m. Sunday, April 13. By law, the sheriff must disclose the location. Deputies urge anyone driving in that area to use caution and be aware of their presence.

"The deputy will ask you for your driver's license, proof of insurance, registration. If the deputy detects any of the symptomatic tails of a drunk driver, then he'll investigate further," Chief Deputy John Samaniego said.

The sheriff's office says deputies have to be prepared for any event during a checkpoint. During past checkpoints, deputies have uncovered illegal drugs and wanted suspects. Last year on Highway 119, a suspect was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle.

Natalie Frazier is a mother of two small children and says drunk drivers are always a concern of  hers.

"My kids are always in my car with me. The fact that they can keep people that are driving drunk off the road, that keeps someone from hitting or hurting me and my kids," Frazier said.

But she and Hannah Dudley wonder if the checkpoint will work since people know about them ahead of time.

"I feel like people are going to avoid that area if they know where it is," Dudley said.
