TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Students from the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy got a boost for their engineering and automotive program on Friday morning. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 136 gave members of the electrathon race team a check for $6,500.

Landon Yerby, a team leader, says the money will help them grow the program. "We're blessed to have money to build an extra car. We'll be able to have extra tires, extra batteries, things like that, things that are more important to the car."

The team came up with a design then built the car accordingly. They recently drove their lone electric car in an endurance race at Barber Motor Sports Speedway.

This donation includes a complete sponsorship and the latest state-of-the-art equipment to be purchased for the car. The team has several sponsors for the first car.

Yerby is happy people are helping support their work. "I am very grateful. This is certainly something that I can't get at my school and if it wasn't for these generous donations we've gotten, this wouldn't be possible."
