Officials: Student brought unloaded gun to after-care program

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

School officials say a first-grader brought an unloaded gun to a YMCA after-care program at Dan Mills Elementary on Thursday.

The 7-year-old reportedly took the gun from his family's home after it was found in a wall during some remodeling.

Officials say the boy's brother discovered the gun when he went to get something out of the boy's backpack.

The gun was put into a cabinet and police were contacted.

The school system called parents at 7 p.m. to alert them.

The principal of the school is going from classroom to classroom on Friday to talk with students about gun safety.
