Attorney General Eric Holder says heroin being sent through the mail is becoming a big problem.

The U.S. Postal Service doesn't want to quantify the problem. In fact, they say that can be difficult to do.

But they stress that is why they are the agency that has the power to investigate and enforce laws that defend the mail system.

Thursday, during a Senate appropriations hearing, Attorney General Holder said it is shocking how many people send illegal drugs through the U.S. Postal Service.

A senator from Alaska then pointed out that she sees this happening a lot with heroin in her district.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service often catches people trying to mail drugs.

In fact, in fiscal year 2012, the number of arrests made for this crime were reportedly up by 33 percent from the previous year. The service works with other drug enforcement agencies to help crack down on the problem.

So are large amounts of heroin coming through the mail in Alabama?

"You mentioned heroin. There are other items, such as marijuana, that's probably the more commonly known item that's attempted to be mailed. Especially since other states, such as Colorado, had made it legal to have marijuana there. You do have some folks that think we can order it from Alabama out of Colorado, since it's legal there. That is illegal to do," U.S. Postal Inspector Tony Robinson said.

One thing inspector Robinson says the Postal Inspection Service sees is once they clamp down hard on this situation, then drug dealers will turn to other courier services, like UPS and Fed Ex to get the drugs through.
