GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

A longtime staple of downtown Gadsden is closing its doors after 73 years.

Hicks Family Shoes has operated in downtown Gadsden for 68 years, and the Hicks family began selling shoes even before that, in World War II.

Hicks Family Shoes survived a 1972 fire, as well as competition from the Gadsden mall, where they opened another location at one point.

The store's manager, who's a third-generation Hicks, says some ongoing legal issues and her parents' health were factors in closing the store.

Heather Hicks Copeland says until the very end, Hicks' six employees always fitted shoes for customers, and that personal relationship made the difference.

"I think with the times changing, with a lot of online shopping, with different types of the way you can shop, I think that us providing customer service, still for those customers as personal relationships, it's what's made us stand out differently from everybody else," she said.

The store is expected to close sometime in mid-May, and will be open during this week's First Friday celebration.
