MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) -

Governor Robert Bentley says the future of economic development and bringing jobs to Alabama will depend on growing a skilled workforce.

This week, Bentley addressed the Alabama Associated General Contractors. The governor says Alabama has workers with strong work ethics but the state needs more skilled employees.

Bentley has asked to put $6 million into a dual enrollment program through which high school students can earn college credits.

"Dual enrollment is very important. So students in high school can get a two year degree when they finish high school, especially if it deals with technical training that is what this money is for," he said.

The governor says he believes education is the most important thing to lift people out of poverty.
